OPENING HOURS

Variable, is the easiest, and arguably most accurate description of Cretan opening hours. They vary according to frequently changing laws and a host of other reasons. The list below is probably as accurate as any can be. Fiesta time is approximately from 2:00pm to 5:30pm, when many establishments close, though most tourist shops stay open during the season as do supermarkets and most kiosks. There is always a kiosk open somewhere at any time during the night and day, at least in the cities.
If you want to make absolutely certain of finding the establishment you want open, best aim for between 9:30am and 12:00am, Monday to Friday.

SUPERMARKETS

Open 8:00am to 8:00pm in winter and 9:00pm in summer (April till end October).
Saturdays they close at 6:00pm and are closed on Sundays and Bank Holidays.

 

SHOPS


greengrocer Open from around 9:00am to 2:00pm Monday to Saturday. On Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays they also additionally open from 5:30pm until 9:00pm. Closed on Sundays and Bank Holidays.

 

 

PETROL STATIONS

Monday to Saturday they generally open from around 8:00am until between 6:00pm and 8:00pm, though some stay open until 10:00pm. Sunday and Bank holiday opening is variable.

 

KIOSKS

Kiosks tend to open very long hours, and during siesta time, and Saturdays and Sundays. There will always be one open somewhere but individual hours are hard to pin down.

 

TOURIST SHOPS


Tourist shops are exempt from the legal constraints imposed on other shops, so opening times tend to vary substantially.touristshop Many stay open until 11:00pm and open on Sundays, and do not observe the siesta. It is unlikely you will find opening hours much of an imposition in any tourist area.
This only applies during the tourist season however, from early May until late October.

 

 

PHARMACIES

Pharmacy hours are the same as shop hours Monday to Friday and they are closed on Saturdays and Sundays. If you need a pharmacy outside of these hours there should be a list displayed in every pharmacy window of one which is open. Generally these will be in the larger towns. This list is usually in Greek however, so the best option is to ask a taxi to take you to one that is open.

 

POST OFFICES

Local post offices are generally open from 7:30am until 2:00pm. Larger ones in the cities are open longer.

Most government agencies are open to the public from 8:00am until 2:pm. Private businesses and service providers are usually open from 9:00am until 5:00pm

Museums and archaeological sites tend to close on Mondays, apart from some of the major ones. Despite being government run hours are variable and some take siestas when they are not supposed to. Mornings are your best guarantee of finding a place open, but check with a tourist office if you can before travelling.
