TAXIS

taxi

Taxis in Crete are very good value and a very convenient way of getting about. The cost is around 0.9euro / km. out of town, and less in town. If you take a taxi at a major taxi stand or the airport, there are often price lists to major destinations.
You can agree a price with the driver for your trip, but if you don’t take this option, make sure the meter is running.
Aside from taxi stands you can stop a taxi anywhere, or order one by telephone (for which there is a small surcharge). It is not uncommon for taxis to stop if they already have a passenger. If the direction is mutually convenient they will take you along. This will not save you any money however. This is an accepted practice by which drivers supplement what is, in fairness, a poor wage.
Taxis operate on two basic tariffs. Tariff 1, applies between 5am and 12pm and also to journeys made within the limits of the town or city where the taxi is registered. Tariff 2, applies between 12pm and 5am and for journeys outside of the town or city limits where the taxi is registered. Tipping is optional and not taken for granted.
Most drivers speak at least a little English, but be very careful when specifying your destination. There are a lot of similar sounding place names in Crete, so mistakes can easily be made with a little bad pronunciation. To ensure mutual agreement on your destination it is best to point it out on a map.
